My watercolor landscape painting began in 1987, several years after finishing my BFA, I decided to study watercolor with the late University of Arizona art professor, Bruce McGrew. I was so inspired by his teaching of light, brushwork and color, that I had finally found a medium that resonated with my heart. Phase two of my art practice started when I lived in Nagoya, Japan and practiced Shodo (Japanese calligraphy). Shodo was the perfect compliment to my recent discovery of expressive watercolor painting with McGrew. Shodo practice continues to be a part of my life to this day.

The introduction to Japanese calligraphy later led my interests toward the Chinese philosophy of painting. I was responding to a landscape spontaneously using simple, fluid brush strokes, without pre-drawing. Currently I am learning to apply this direct painting approach into my landscape and still life oil paintings. Here the scenes are portrayed with a fresh look, capturing the moment of a scene.

Similar to Shodo, my work is based on the true understanding and inner spirit (ch’i-yun) I have for a subject or character. I want to share my vision of natural beauty with others, in hopes that they too can sense the peace and quietness of nature through art.

Artists of inspiration: Phil Starke, Thomas Kitts, Fedor Zakharov, Paul Cezanne, Bruce McGrew
